Government has presented the budget for next year, with a clear electoral tone, but aiming to balance the budget - opposition thinks the books will not balance, but will cause a deficit; The Toledo pensions Pact has been approved by the Congress, assuring pensioners that their pensions will rise at least in line with inflation; Vitoria: Basque president Ibarretxe has announced his 'sovreignty plan' (see theme Basque issues) - this is causing the expected stir; in Madrid a Basque terrorist support man is in court for his part in the Ermua killing of Miguel Angel Blanco which caused millions to demonstrate across the Basque country and Spain in July 1997 - the supposed killers are under arrest in France; Malaga: Briton Tony King confessed to the murder of the two girls, friend Robert Graham released as his cover-up charge was over the date limit; Al Yazira reporter Taysir Alouny arrested in Granada - now imprisoned pending trial for suspected links with Al Quaeda - he interviewed Bin Laden after 9/11 ; two more arrested in Granada in connection with this case; Spanish 'Plus Ultra' brigade takes over security in Najaf, Shiite centre in Iraq, from US Marines; tickets on sale for new high speed rail link between Madrid and Lleida (Barcelona), opening October; Andalusia makes sign language co-official with Castilian; Iberia in possible merger talks with British Airways.

Sport:

Magno, Brazilian football player for Alavés has announced his conversion kneeling as he scored a goal - he is claiming his good form at the start of this season is the inner peace he has found in Christ. Athletics: World Championships: Spanish evangelical runner Glory Alozie (of Nigerian origin) came 4th in 100m hurdles, just missing the podium - congratulations, anyway!

TV Good News! Coinciding ('coincidentally') with the churches' National Day of Prayer for the evangelisation of Spain, Buenas Nuevas TV, the new look and now weekly evangelical TV programme, will start broadcasts on TVE on 5th October at 08.30 local time (06.30 GMT until last Sunday in October when one hour earlier).
