While Rome (or Spain) burns..

... parliament fiddles! 5th June. Spanish politicians are keen to put words to the National Anthem. As ETA were preparing to announce a return to arms and as local politicians fought out who will run the regions and town councils, the national parliament has called for some words to accompany the music of the National Anthem. The British and the French, to name but a few, can all sing along to their national anthem, when celebrating the victory of a sport personality or team. But poor Spaniards remain silent. Mariano Rajoy, leader of the opposition Partido Popular called yesterday for a text to get the deputies' approval.

Deputies in Madrid may approve, but what will the people of Spain's non-Castilian speaking regions say - or sing? The idea is likely to raise more problems than it solves.

Economist comment.
