Water reserves:

[Image 48???]In a year of drought, water reserves are important. At 14th February the reservoirs were back above 48% of capacity, but filling more slowly than average for the time of year. While the Basque Country is at its limits, in the south east the situation is still especially critical.

The Tajo basin has some big hydro-electric schemes, which mostly had to be turned off due to lack of flow over the summer, available reserves being fed to towns and agriculture. Now the lower Tajo reservoirs are back to above 60%, but the upper Tajo, Spain's most important reserve is still badly hit at 11%, as are other regions in the South and East. Water is also flowing well in the Basque Country, but the highest falls were on the coast and could not be retained for future use.
As to drinking water reserves, the Jucar reservoirs, covering the Costa Blanca is most worrying, with only 11.2%. The Segura, covering the Manga Menor tourist rea and heavy industry of Cartagena, is only a bit better, with 14.1% of capacity remaining, thanks to transfers from other regions, which cannot now continue. Meanwhile the Costa del Sol has just 29.2% of reserves -Málaga itself still just 14.8%.
