Water reserves:

Reserves mid October

Reserves mid October

In a second year of drought, water reserves are important. At 31st October the reservoirs were only just starting to recover, back up to 45.2% of capacity (last week 40%) but only 36.4% (up from 32.3%) of drinking water capacity. The situation has been alleviated by severe rainy weather in the North and West, but overall there is little improvement. The situation remains critical in the South East - worse over this week. Reserves remain close to the lowest levels ever and records for rainfall also lowest since records began.

In particular, the Jucar river reservoirs, feeding the Costa Blanca, have just 4.7% of capacity, the Segura (Mar Menor) has 9.1%, Malaga has 12.5% and the upper Tajo area, Spains largest reservoir system, which could feed many parts of the south and east, has a mere 10.5%, at the limit for allowing transfers to other regions. This year's orange crop is badly hit by the ban on watering, although some rainfall during September and October may have brought a reprieve to drinking water supplies as it trickles into the reservoirs.
